Portugal’s parliament passed a measure intended to boost National or home-grown music by setting a fixed quota for radio. Stations are now expected to play 25% of Portuguese music and the ones that don’t face fines of up to 50,000 euros. This measure was introduced not only to help local bands but also as an instrument to maintain it’s identity in the European Union. In 2005 only 7% of music played by radio stations was Portuguese while local music represented 25% of total sales.
