Gay wedding in portugal

Two women are waiting to find out whether they will be able to get married in Portugal. Taking advantage of a divergence in the law, Teresa Pires and Helena Paixao have become the first homosexual couple to try and register their marriage in Portugal. The Two women tried to register their marriage on Wednesday in an attempt to capture attention to the need for marriage equality but expected to be turned away.
"Our desire to get married is just as strong as heterosexual couples," Stated Teresa Pires to reporters outside the registration office.
The couple said that a newly introduced article in the constitution which bans discrimination based on sexual orientation permitted them to get married. But justice minister Alberto Costa disagrees, stating that Portugal's civil code, which bans same sex marriages, prevails.
