Tourism increases 13,4%

According to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in December of 2005, the number of hotel “sleepovers” ascended to 1,8 million, more 6.3% of that in the same period of 2004 representing an increase of around 13,4%.
"For this increase contributed national residents mainly (16,8%), since non resident also presented an positive evolution, but of minor significance (0,2%)", explained the INE.
The Northern region of Portugal was where the number of customers obtained the largest increased (18.4%), while the Autonomous Region of Açores was the only one to present a decrease (15.5%). In 2005 the industry registered around 35,6 million clients that represents an increase of 4,3% compared with the previous year.
